The Rich Heritage Of Goli Soda In India
India’s love affair with fizzy drinks began in the late 1860s when Pallonji’s, a Mumbai-based brand, introduced one of the country’s first carbonated sodas. As the popularity of soda surged, iconic Indian brands like Ardeshir(established in Pune in 1884) and Duke & Sons (launched in 1889) entered the scene, setting the foundation forIndia’s thriving desi soda market. Ardeshir is widely celebrated as a pioneer of Indian soda culture.
The legendary Banta Bottle, also known as Goli Soda Bottle, actually traces its roots to London. It was invented by soft drink innovator Hiram Codd in 1872, who patented the unique Codd-neck bottle — designed to seal carbonated drinks using a glass marble. This distinctive design quickly gained popularity in Europe and India, becoming the go-to bottle for fizzy beverages.
Until the early 1930s, these iconic Codd bottles were imported from Germany and Britain, but soon after, local production began, making the Goli Soda bottle a symbol of nostalgic refreshment across India.
